Rillet

Rillet is a new general ledger taking venture-backed companies off QuickBooks and NetSuite. Accounting math stays deterministic; AI handles intake and review with human approval. Its own CPAs run migrations it quotes at four to six weeks. By August 2026 it claimed 600-plus customers and a $1B valuation. Only about 30% came from NetSuite or Intacct; the QuickBooks exit remains the engine.

The market it attacks

Venture-backed companies climb a ladder: QuickBooks to NetSuite or Sage Intacct. NetSuite, founded 1998, sold to Oracle for about $9.3B in 2016. It now claims 43,000-plus customers; Dynamics GP support ends December 2029. Controllers and small teams run these ledgers, helped by outside admins. Graduating companies face ten-plus specialists and 15 to 20 manual close days. The ledger is the audited record; removing it is open-heart surgery, says Sequoia. Migration pain, trained workforces, bundles and history keep buyers put. Lunai paid NetSuite $85K to $100K a year and was quoted $150K-plus for multi-currency.

Origin and the first wedge

Kopp, N26’s US CEO, and Modes, who built its payment stack, founded it in 2021. The legal entity is Gnau Inc.; Sequoia says both hit legacy-ledger limits scaling N26. Kopp sometimes waited four to six weeks for entity consolidations at N26. He decided the close was a software problem, not a human one. Data had moved into API-first tools like Stripe, Salesforce and Brex. US accounting graduates fell 6.6% combined in the 2023-24 academic year. The AI chronology is dated: a co-pilot waitlist ran from June 2023. The July 2024 launch still said automation-first; AI-native became the 2025 label. Rillet says it built for three years before launching.

The first customers

A partial ERP could not be sold; platform-first was the only credible wedge. The wedge was SaaS and AI companies, led by revenue recognition and ARR tracking. The forced moment is outgrowing QuickBooks; Postscript left over shekel exposure. Halcyon left partly because its revenue recognition was not audit-ready. First ten are unnamed; early site logos include Omni, Codat, Lang.ai, Rundoo, Graphite Financial. A late-2024 page targeted the Maxio-plus-QuickBooks stack directly. Lang.ai’s COO said Rillet was closing its books within weeks, a service bridge. With zero references, first sales came through desperation, dinners and the Ramp partner. An industry Slack channel carried word to Image Relay’s accounting director. Evaluation ran in sandboxes rather than a multi-meeting funnel. In-house CPAs own the data move, chart review and reconciliation, four to eight weeks. Rillet says it prices on features and complexity now, not seats or revenue. Allovue left Intacct in a week and cut software spend from $60K to $20K. A third-party tracker puts the median contract near $28,300 a year, sample size unstated.

How big it is now

Four rounds total about $208.5M, ending with ICONIQ’s $100M August 2026 Series C. The C’s Form D lists $100.1M across 22 investors, first sale August 18. Commitments for the round came in under 48 hours. Year-end 2024 brought 100 customers and a reported NPS of 70. Customers ran near 200 in May 2025, 300-plus in January 2026, 600-plus by August. The mix runs 50% Intuit and 30% NetSuite or Intacct. The last 20% came from Oracle, SAP, Workday and Microsoft. Microsoft’s product range includes Dynamics GP, so that cohort is not all enterprise. About 40% of customers sit outside tech. Revenue is undisclosed; the doubling measure differs across statements. Named customers include Windsurf, Postscript, Neuralink, Mercor and Sotheby’s. Channels include Armanino, Wiss, EY US, RSM and, per ICONIQ, KPMG. Expensify’s Q1 2026 filing lists a new Rillet ERP agreement.

What made it hard

Zero-reference buyers asked how many customers it had; NetSuite now sells that doubt. It holds SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type II reports for audit trust. Auditor-independence rules cap the Big Four implementation channel. Platform breadth drowned the team after the first five to ten sales. It still lacks inventory, manufacturing and project accounting. NetSuite cites missing multibook, localization and only recent fixed assets. Winning customers off NetSuite took longer, lacking a forced switching moment. A misfit go-to-market hire cost three to four months of runway. Kopp concedes it could not legitimately support Toyota today. Rillet quotes four to six weeks; G2 reviewers average about two months. Rillet says Intacct and NetSuite exits run faster; that data was cleaned once. Kopp calls the three-year stealth “really not the recommended approach.” NetSuite Next and Intuit Enterprise Suite now target the same seam.

The strategy

It is greenfield with migration-led delivery, not an overlay. An early bookkeeping bridge became software; no acquisitions were found. The path runs QuickBooks exit, broader finance, then incumbent ledgers. Kopp says it will never build HR or CRM. About 180 NetSuite/Intacct switches equal roughly 0.4% of NetSuite’s base. The product remains a subset of an ERP by its CEO’s own words. Puzzle’s software plans run $30 to $360 a month across 7,000-plus users. Accrual agreed to buy Puzzle’s firm business in September 2026, pending close. Lensing raised $140M before launch and built HR and cloud-cost modules. It bets end-to-end scope beats GL-first; named customers stay scarce.

What others can copy

Wedge on a moment, not a feature: name the event that forces the re-platform. Own the migration with domain staff: test a go-live inside two months. Keep the core deterministic: test whether an auditor can reproduce every posting. Borrow trust from auditors’ peers: count firms implementing or auditing on your stack. Ship live before you announce: production customers on press day. Price to fund white-glove delivery: test first-year revenue against migration labor. These are founder tests to run, not results already achieved.

Open questions

ARR is undisclosed and the doubling measure differs across statements. A rough $17M revenue inference depends on the $28K median holding. Enterprise proof is thin: public case Lunai held a $6M value and a material weakness. No verified renewal data is public; lean-team claims are challenged. Incumbents argue AI-native prices reflect investor subsidies. Serving the 20% prior-vendor cohort without drowning in breadth is untested.

Limits

Customer counts and mix come from the company and its investors. The Puzzle acquisition is announced, not closed. Switch counts are shares of a claimed total, not audited figures.
